This is why the “Born Again” experience is so indispensable to the human experience. The New Birth allows us to start all over again with a clean slate. The Bible teaches us that the death of Christ served to exculpate us from the guilt and shame of sin. “And you, being dead (separated from God) in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, hath He quickened (brought back to life) together with Him, having forgiven you all trespasses; Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to His cross.” (Col. 2:13-14). The parentheses are mine.
What this statement simply means is that although prior to our conversion, we were spiritually dead, because of the sin principle in us and our sinful lifestyles, the death of Jesus Christ on our behalf has afforded us forgiveness of all our of sins from God, and resurrection life in Christ. The shed blood of Jesus Christ becomes efficacious to perpetuate both cleansing and forgiveness in our lives. (1st Jn. 1:7). Furthermore, not only has God forgiven us all trespasses, but He has also removed the charges that were held against us as though they never even existed.
The entirety of the Mosaic Law, which is here described as “the handwriting of ordinances” represents the whole human race as being condemned before God. The Law of Moses pretty much spelled out how God expected people to live before Him. However, the only One who fulfilled the requirements of the Law perfectly was Jesus the Christ. By His propitiatory death on the Cross of Calvary on our behalf, Christ Jesus has enabled God the Father to legitimately accept as righteous before Him, everyone who accepts the sacrificial death of His Son Jesus on their behalf. This means that anyone who rejects the Christ rejects salvation, healing, and restoration for his or her human spirit, soul, and body. Paul, the apostle declares that outside of a true relationship with God the Father through faith in the Person and work of His Son Jesus, there is no hope of salvation, healing, and restoration for humanity. (Eph. 2:12). In other words, everyone who attempts to live his or her life without a personal relationship with God is hopelessly doomed to living a purposeless and meaningless existence, and is considered by God to be a fool. (Psalm 14).
Juxtaposed against this dark backdrop is one of the greatest paradoxes of the human experience -- humanity’s propensity for worship. One may go into the deepest, darkest, and remotest jungle, and find man attempting to appease his god(s) through some form of sacrificial ritual. This attests to the fact that man is consciously aware that there is either something or someone greater than himself. (Rom. 1:19-23). Consequently many have attempted to invent a god of their own design in a futile attempt to find that ever-elusive peace, for which they so ardently seek. It is cruelly ironic that the gods of our own making have no ability to deliver us from, nor sustain us in the vicissitudes of life. The Bible teaches us “Man that is born of a woman is of few days, and full of trouble.” (Job 14:1). What this statement simply means is that the human race is full of trouble. That is to say that the troubles that man experiences are in him. The salvation experience is designed to not only get man out of trouble, but primarily to extricate trouble out of man.
Basically, humanity is a spiritual, psychological, emotional, and physiological wreck. The Bible says that humanity is totally unprofitable to God. (Rom. 3:10-18). In other words if a man or woman is not reconciled back to God, they are useless to Him as relates to His plans and purposes for their life. Humanity has a supernatural problem, which necessitates a supernatural remedy. That remedy is called the “New Birth,” It is only through the New Birth experience that mankind can be salvaged, i.e. restored to a right relationship to both God and itself. However, this process can only begin if humanity voluntarily capitulates to the strivings of the Holy Spirit upon its heart. If men and women refuse the saving message of the Gospel, there is no other remedy that can save them. They are doomed to live out their godless tenure in time, and after physical death, enter into a Christless eternity. They will never experience the healing and restoration that their human spirits so desperately needs. Hence, the New Birth becomes absolutely essential to effecting said healing. This healing and restorative process begins with the forgiveness of our sins through faith in the death, burial, and resurrection of our Lord, Jesus the Christ.
